Chi-Raq is advertised as a true story but many feel
this movie is a misrepresentation of Chicago's Englewood community but as usual
Lee stands by his films one hundred percent including the fact there are
Chicago natives playing roles in the movie. The title alone allude that Chicago is a war zone the Mayor of
Chicago among others was hoping the title would change.
None is negating there have been over 100 murders this year but if
you want to shed light on a community in crisis why not help these communities
instead of shining light on the flaws. Open up a school for the performance
arts, bring business that can lead to employment, community centers not making
a movie about Englewood and having your audience think the entire city of
Chicago is this way. Several movies, books, plays, articles famous people feeling sorry for Chicago but no one cares enough for real to help. Chicago is not the only city who suffers from senseless murders and according to the movie I'm scared to leave out of my house and hear gunshots daily. I'm not impressed. It's my fear that the youth now in Englewood maybe a
product of this movie. They may think street gangs and murder is the norm, they
won't try to escape they will try to imitate the roles in this movie. This
movie raise some valuable points but not everyone or everything that comes from
Chicago is bad, the title alone will make someone mind up if they will come
here to visit. So Spike Lee wants Chicagoans to wake up but I challenge him to come help us wake up.
